The region also offers a rich variety of indoor recreational facilities, including the EJ Broomfield Arena, CFB Recreation Centre, as well as the Wellness Centre. The new Central Labrador YMCA officially opened in the Wellness Centre in 2021 and has been a welcome new venue for the region’s physical activity and recreational opportunities. Visitors flock to the region for conferences, meetings, appointments, education, training, work and of course, pleasure.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the gateway to Northern Labrador. The Upper Lake Melville region is made up of four vibrant communities: Happy Valley-Goose Bay, North West River, Sheshatshui, and Mud Lake. The population of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is over 8,000 full-time residents, while North West River, only 40 kilometres away, has a population of 550. The First Nations Reserve of Sheshatshui has a population of about 1,200 people, while the village of Mud Lake has over 50 full-time residents.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the central point for the shipment of goods along the coastal areas of Labrador and business services is the largest employment industry. As a result, the total catchment area includes Central Labrador (Upper Lake Melville), North Coast communities and South Coast communities.

As the hub of Labrador, Happy Valley-Goose Bay has regional offices for federal, provincial and Indigenous governments, as well as a hospital, college and private training schools. The community is also home to 5 Wing Goose Bay, a Canadian Air Force base.

The development of Town Centre will be the first realization of the greater community vision to develop an integrated and active northern lifestyle community.
